Introduction:
Extended Haraka (Madd) is an important skill for Qur’an recitation to be beautiful, balanced and harmonized. Knowledge of (Madd) is like a scale the reciter uses to balance the timing of pronouncing letters and words.
(Madd) is extending the time of pronouncing a vowel (Alef, Yaa’ and Waw):
Alef: preceded by a letter with (Fat’ha)
Yaa’: preceded by a letter with (Kasrah)
Waw: preceded by a letter with (Dhammah).
These three vowel letters are found together in a Qur’anic word (نوحيها) in Surat Huud, verse 49.
Extensions are of different types, but all are related to the three letters, mentioned above, when they precede Hamza or Sukoon; or preceded by Hamza.
The start of studying extensions is natural extensions.
